Hi Olivia, we actually say “mitochondria is” because that’s how the phrase is used in pop culture. While commonly used, it is wrong, and that’s part of our point. Public science education in the US needs a massive overhaul, and our mission is to help fill in the gaps

I don't strongly object if people abandon original plurals in English, so mitochondrions, meh, but mitochondrias would be a step too far.
