here's a thoughtful and compelling argument by @ProfData that theories should be developed at the algorithmic level, where constraints from marr's upper (computational theory) and lower (implementation) levels converge. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/tops.12131 …pic.twitter.com/vvvT8qArRU

Will check this out, thanks! @TecumsehFitch's paper expanding the Marr's three levels is probably relevant reading here too - https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S157106451400058X …pic.twitter.com/rA19gSYiBj

nope - this is an inadvertent definition of the fundamental problem: we have no idea what the computational level is (language, anyone?) and absent same, well specified algorithmic work is the closest we get to science... @profdata does this; most of the cited spooge doesn't

Why ‘nope’, if I may ask. Do you mean that paper is not relevant?

Just finished reading @ProfData's paper—great stuff! I am all for the 'inside-out' approach that you discuss. Regarding your comments @ramscar1, I am more inclined to agree with @IrisVanRooij here in that cognitive science benefits from a diversity of approaches.

As Fitch puts it, we can benefit from synthesising the great ideas of Marr, Bayes, and Tinbergen as a theoretical framework to think about what we are doing.

And specifically, comparative biology perspectives (i.e. think Tinbergen's four questions) help us further constrain the computational level in useful ways.

A well specified algorithmic level is arguably necessary for strong claims about cognition. And we can certainly go a long way on the bridge between algorithmic and implementation, but I think our methods and theories are stronger for considering other aspects too.

This other paper by @ProfData might be useful to understand the context/criticisms here: "Bayesian Fundamentalism or Enlightenment? On the explanatory status and theoretical contributions of Bayesian models of cognition. Jones M, Love BC." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/21864419/ …
