Yeah, I might do a preprint before submitting next. I'm sometimes a bit self conscious with preprinting single-author papers without any feedback beforehand... of course, this wasn't the sort of feedback I was looking for either.

Not this time, it was for a special issue and there was a deadline.

Ah! Got you. I got invited to a special issue after they saw the work, submitted, and they rejected it. So yeah... I know the feeling!

My lab had that happen too. In our case though, we really had a lot we needed to do better with. But we got really helpful critiques that showed us how to do better.
