Not sure about rest of Europe, but in my experience UK programmes normally allow you to claim back travel costs if invited to interview as well.

(Sorry to jump in). Applications for PhD places in the UK are free except for Cambridge and Oxford, they charge £50/~$65 each to apply. Most places will refund you travel costs & I don't remember about food.

I think that's what we've been saying.

Yep, but good to hear as many experiences as possible. I still don't know what's normal in the rest of the EU, so anyone else who has experience of this please do chip in (
@o_guest, what happens in Cyprus?). -
What happens in Cyprus for what — reimbursements? I doubt there are any. University is for all intents and purposes free there as it is in most of the EU. I did not study there so I cannot say anything more.
-
Thanks! Yes, meant reimbursements for interview; wasn't sure if you'd applied.
-
Cyprus is impossible to really do reimbursement for travel. Firstly, it is ~240km east/west and max ~100km north/south, but it's divided due to an ongoing war/peace process so technically even smaller. And there is basically no public transport.
-
So they would have to pay petrol, which is kind of impossible to do given you'd be driving from home. Kind of a pointless concept in such a country.
-
Asking for the Uni(s) to pay airline tickets is a joke as they laugh at you — is my semi-educated guess. They have no such resources.
