Apparently they charge it to all applicants even undergrads these days. I think both Leeds and York would reimburse up to 200 pounds. I had to get a last minute train to London for my interview here and it cost me nearly 100 pounds. Thankfully worth it.
The annoying thing was I could walk to my Leeds interview and the train to York cost about 15 quid...
My flight from Cyprus was significantly more than 200 quid. I think they also reimbursed my accommodation but not sure.
I don't remember Oxford reimbursing travel for undergrad interview, but 99% sure accommodation (in college) and meals were paid.
Fair but different.
Tbh if I had to choose one I'd prefer travel reimbursement for the reason you already mentioned - some will incur much higher travel costs without necessarily being able to pay.
Mine was Ph.D. too. I actually declined my interview for my undergrad because I wasn't bothered to fly for 6 hours. They still took me.
(Sorry to jump in). Applications for PhD places in the UK are free except for Cambridge and Oxford, they charge £50/~$65 each to apply. Most places will refund you travel costs & I don't remember about food.
