Why would @cogsci_soc unfollow @o_guest just after she did a great service by contributing to the @WomenInCogSci session?https://twitter.com/natvelali/status/1022243353910501378?s=21 …

Titus: Some of us consider social media as a meaningful tool to promote inclusivity and good scientific practice. In that context, being followed by a major society is significant.
Yes, fully agree. But we know from research about the negative effects of social media for psychological well-being. They are the reason why I personally chose to quit Facebook and why I'm often considering to quit twitter. I was just speaking about my own experience.
I understand your experience. You need to counter weight it but realising even if it's true that it's stressful to interact on social media it's equally (if not more so?) to interact offline socially for women.
And any cues to help with offline interaction (like who or what is following you online) are actually valuable pieces of information if you are navigating the complex social world as a woman (sexism, etc).
Unlike you we can't in all cases, e.g., offline, chose to delete our accounts and forget about it. Because unlike you the online world for us might actually predict offline reactions and interactions.
For example, sexually inappropriate messages sent to me by colleagues (who exist in my field and offline) on Twitter cannot be addressed AT ALL by deleting my account.
So yeah, privilege.
No, this is not what I wanted to say. I'm sorry if my tweet was unclear and I apologize. My own experience is that it's easy to get anxieties about social media and I'm very unsure whether social media are psychologically healthy for me personally. That's all. Sorry again.
My point was initially just to laugh at the hilarity/irony given I am a paid member and organised a panel for women in comp cog at cogsci. It is part of a trend IMHO — there are a few side-threads, so a lot to read, but probably worth it if I'm honest:https://twitter.com/ProfData/status/1024274979762987008 …
Yup! [Basically said same in side-thread.]https://twitter.com/o_guest/status/1024354554199126016 …
Perhaps people who love getting into other people's homes to tell them what to do, aka trolls, should indeed consider quitting social media, at least until their social skills are up to the task.
Esther, didn't mean to tell anyone what to do. I just made a statement about my own difficult relationship with social media. Sorry if the tweet could be read to mean anything beyond that. It was not intended to be sarcastic.
