A lot of factors at play. Afterwards during my first postdoc, in Oxford, people would tend to shower me with compliments on occasion. Age plays a role as much as anything.

Sorry didnt mean to insinuate it was a phase! Just meant it means people back home are chill about goths. Yeah definitely. And more often than not the people hurling abuse are idiot teenagers. There used to be a big goth vs "chav" thing in the UK and people were really abusive

I'm sad to hear that extended into your professional life though. Those people are idiots and really need to grow up

The woman who did it the most, I suspect, had her own swathe of personal issues and while it was obviously an attempt at mobbing in the workplace and unacceptable, I kind of feel bad. Punching down that hard... Something must be really wrong.

I know your experience is different but it's actually a little hard for me to talk about mine as a goth in the UK. People tend to think it doesn't happen, but it does.

I get dismissed a lot. It's exhausting. Just a few years ago a kid, around 10, pretended to punch me in the street while saying "fuck goths" in Hackney.

I know you don't mean it that way but you often reply when I talk about my experiences with how it's really good where you grew up. It was really good for being alternative where I grew up too. I never received any abuse for being goth.

I think it's been really hard for me with respect to this. I stopped being a goth for about 6 years.

Ugh what is wrong with people. I 100% believe you - when I was a teenager someone pulled a knife on a friend for being a goth. It's a ridiculous prejudice to have and I'm glad things have improved for you somewhat.

I really dont know what it is about British culture that this behaviour is encouraged.

Me neither. I hope it's improving.
