Weirdly it's only since coming into science I've started dressing in a way that I feel really reflects me as a person. Not sure if it's my financial situation or just not giving a crap what people think that has changed

That's nice! I was bullied about my goth appearance in the UK and even more in UK science way more so than in high-school. So much so that for a few years I stopped being a goth.
Difference might be, I'm an immigrant, people hate goths in UK — in Cy everybody is a metal head. -
I think it depends on part of the UK. There a huge goth and heavy metal culture in my home city - Birmingham - to the extent I think most people go through a goth phase.
-
That sucks though :(
-
Not a phase for me, but yeah fair enough.
I thought I'd be accepted in York due to Whitby not being that far etc etc. But not really. -
The really explicit stuff was in London during my PhD. "Are you depressed? Is that why you dress that way?" and on and on.
-
A lot of factors at play. Afterwards during my first postdoc, in Oxford, people would tend to shower me with compliments on occasion. Age plays a role as much as anything.

-
Sorry didnt mean to insinuate it was a phase! Just meant it means people back home are chill about goths. Yeah definitely. And more often than not the people hurling abuse are idiot teenagers. There used to be a big goth vs "chav" thing in the UK and people were really abusive

Doesn’t matter what you do or how you look while you do it, there’s always someone determined to tell you that you’re doing it wrong. Fortunately, most of those people are inconsequential fools.

People are weird. I was told many times that I'd never be listened to without a strip of cloth around my neck, or a shorter hair. Apparently, senior decision-makers were so in awe of these magic symbols that, without them, all advice must be assumed to be the word of demons.

I felt like I had found my people when I wasn’t the only person in leather pants at SfN. In physics conferences if you didn’t wear slacks and blue shirt there were comments. I can only imagine how much worse it is for women.
