4/ But over the years I became bitter. I struggled to be happy for my old friends getting tenure. Or my young colleagues getting jobs. I kept it to myself (as most of us do), but it was time for a change.

5/ For those entering the market, I wish I had good advice, but no one does. Everyone told me my issue was ‘fit’. I just needed to produce more; pubs, awards, eventually large grants. Lacking real knowledge, people were just giving me tenure advice.

6/ Life also gets complicated. By the time I got offers I had put down roots. I had a successful partner, happy kids, a home. None of which I regret. I feel worst for friends who put off life AND didn’t ever land a faculty job.

7/ So, if I have advice, its this- Don’t wait. On love, research, life. Study questions you’re passionate about now, rather than waiting on an uncertain future. People say that’s risky but it’s the exact opposite. You will leave your mark.

8/ I’ll be putting out a vision statement soon. In the meantime, talk to me. Ask questions. Tell me what conferences to go to. Science is uniquely positioned to communicate your work to the public, If you're passionate about that, then work with me. Let’s build this together.

Some expressed support for theoretical and conceptual work that uses formal/computational modeling tools and simulations would be much needed and welcome. This is something we need more of. See this thread, for instance, for contexthttps://twitter.com/irisvanrooij/status/944229898016755714?s=21 …

Iris van Rooij @IrisVanRooijWe need theory, alongside empirical work, not only to a) explain phenomena we observe, in lab or world, & b) derive predictions to test, but als c) to structure our own thoughts about the 'why' & 'how' of phenomena & d) test their internal consistency and explanatory sufficiency.Show this thread1 reply 2 retweets 6 likes -

And as for conferences to attend, I’d suggest
@cogsci_soc + co-located conferences: ICCM & Math Psych. Great venues to see state of the art theoretical modeling & simulation work (https://twitter.com/venpopov/status/1022528473695485952?s=21 …) Any other suggestions@o_guest@mvugt@bradpwyble@PratherLab@venpopov?Iris van Rooij added,

I attended ASIC once. Great concept and atmosphere. Would love to attend again. I’m planning on a visit to Canada next June, so perhaps ASIC 2020.
