This, more than anything else is why source control mechanisms should be used. Learn Git, write in plain text, and save yourself the hassle of seeing files like this. https://twitter.com/warrenellis/status/1020730211967619072 …

That's because no one takes the time to learn git properly, despite the fact that there are interactive resources that teach you all the tricks, like:https://learngitbranching.js.org/

If you want to get someone to transition from word to VC, I've found that
@simuldocs is a great stepping stone. They get the concepts of VC first and then they can move on to the transition from WYSIWYG to plain text.1 reply 1 retweet 5 likes -
But I feel I need to add that as much as I hate WYSIWYG for myself some people need it. If you use Word (or similar) and want to make sure you don't lose data use the service your university most likely provides that backs up your hard drive to tape every week or so. Ask.

And also services like Dropbox do similar but can't recommend them for work if your university isn't comfortable with using them. Again ask.

I think one of my biggest peeves for dropbox/box/googledrive is that they hide the versioning, so it's harder for people to connect with what's going on behind the scenes.

Absolutely. Unless you pay.
