This is a fundamental distinction that, unfortunately, is too often disregarded and one critical reason why, in my view, many psychologists misunderstand the complexities of building computational models

I'm not sure I fully understand the difference. Is implementation here the actual coding langauge/software (which I guess would be similar to Marr's levels)? Is it still common for psychologists to use these kinds of models tied to specific code?

Grace, I'm really sorry I have a migraine (been 3 weeks now), so I am going to link to something I wrote and get back to prepping a talk: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.cogsys.2013.05.001 … When I feel better/have less on my plate I'll come back — also I am sure Esther and others can do a great job. Sorry!

Also just to be clear the answer is in what I linked to but I obviously would rather talk it out over Twitter since I know it's useful in and of itself. 🌺 I promise to return when I get some headspace/spoons back!

Olivia is the expert here but plainly put, the main difference is that the implementation (code) includes many instructions that are alien to the theory itself and that are required for the program to work.

A Bayesian conception of the distinction might be model = structure, implementation = structure + params + data.

Does that capture that an implementation might contain like graphs and stuff that are by no means important to the theory or model at all?

Nope. You're right. Sticking with Bayes, implementation would also include sampler etc.

Is sampler not seen as part of theory? I thought sometimes sampling is part of the algorithmic level hypothesis. Coincidentally, just saw this come by on the #iccmpsyched hashtag:https://twitter.com/flosense/status/1021071829623091200?s=21 …

Interesting. I wouldn't think so though. If I implement my model in stan, and then switch to jags, I wouldn't think I would change anything about my theory.

I'm not equivocating between theory and spec but they can serve a similar role. https://figshare.com/articles/Varieties_of_Reproducibility_in_Empirical_and_Computational_Domains/6818018 …pic.twitter.com/3GTTzV3gIH

I agree that the implementation vs theory distinction is important. As Grace brought up Marr: I notice that students in my comp & formal modeling class often confuse implementation of theory for purposes of computer simulation with (Marr’s) ‘implementational-level theory’.

Once that comfusion is cleared up they often still find it hard to distinguish which part of the code corresponds to computational level and which to algorithmic, as they all look like algorithms. But often algorithms are only a way to derive/simulate comp-level predictions.
