LOL I'd have shot back with a detailed story of my 30 hour labor. I can upstage pretty much any vasectomy story with that one.pic.twitter.com/mnIInHva9h

Why would you mock someone for being in pain? I've been in pain for 4,800 hours since my vasectomy in December. Here is your opportunity to tell me that's funny if you still want to take it.

What's the context? That vasectomy is inherently mockable? Let's try the tweet again without the vasectomy:

Once when I was in grad school, a professor at a journal club reception went on and on about the ball pain and swelling he had due to his treatment for testicular cancer. I told him I was happy his wife wasn't having any more of HIS kids.

I mean, it's probably TMI to go on about your health problems at a party. On the other hand, I would usually consider it rude for someone to trivialize someone's pain or tell them the world is better off with them sterilized.

It's fine to talk about your gonads with close friends if you want. It's questionable but maybe ok to talk about it in a professional setting with an equal ranked peer.
@McLNeuro was neither of those things to the professor as a grad student. That is why it was inappropriate.1 reply 0 retweets 14 likes -

No doubt. Also, the male/female thing. E.g. it would not seem the same if a female professor was inappropriately complaining about her tubal ligation pain and swelling, and the male grad student said that on the upside at least she wouldn't burden her husband with more kids.

Nah I'd still say that's inappropriate. Maybe not quite so weirdly creepy because fallopian tubes aren't directly involved in sexual acts, but still "why the crap is she telling ME about this, I don't want to know that about a prof I mean OMG".

It's a power move and a transgression of boundaries, yup.

It's asking for emotional labour from people at work who have no way to opt out.
