ok i’ll say it. there seems to be a group of (academic) men on twitter, who only show up in my mentions to impart some wisdom, without ever liking anything i say or even engaging with what i say. they seem to be looking for a platform to voice their opinions. glad to know they

Also there's a couple of women (sadly, although they don't know each other) who only interact with me to tell me "I'm not coming to your talk because I'd rather go for a swim" etc. I have this in writing and it's a really clear "fuck you".
-
I can imagine they "don't mean it" but it's extremely upsetting to receive a message completely out of the blue just before giving a talk to tell me about how they would rather not come to my talk.
-
And by "upsetting" I definitely don't mean personally as I've no issue being civil and friendly with them but it's highly negative behaviour and will likely harm them just as much as other people they do it.
-
Wow that is some messed up behavior

I always appreciate that, if you call me out on something (on either of my accounts, whether or not in an academic capacity), you do so fully intending to discuss the issue. This thread has made me consider whether i can always say the same of myself, so thanks for that,

I am hesitant to call individuals out but I try to promote genuine engagement in good faith. For that, one needs to at least listen to/acknowledge what one responds to. Otherwise it turns into an uninvited/irrelevant soliloquy. I also try to improve my interactions in this light.
