It's morbidly fascinating that my next door neighbour invites himself over to have a drink and quite casually remark that he's a Nazi, like people mention their quirky habits like drinking milk out of the carton.

One thing that has been bothering me for the past few years is this "You don't look / sound like a regular Turk, which apparently is intended to sound like a compliment. Yeah bro, all 85m of us are basically carpetbaggers from Istanbul.

It now appears that Cold War was not some Atlanticist wonks playing some mystical Kremlinology, but a steady normalisation of actual, bare-faced fascism because ugh, communism is actually worse.

They're pretty cool people too, from what little I know. Switching between half a dozen European languages, albeit at a very limited command, on a daily basis to shift around gaudy souvenirs is actually quite challenging.

Also I totally get you, see my thread here from a day or so agohttps://twitter.com/o_guest/status/1018115031131619328?s=19 …

Olivia Guest | Ολίβια Γκεστ @o_guestI know my surname is not "typically Cypriot" as you all like to remind me, but stop doing it as soon as we meet & you know my name [e.g., at conferences]. It's genuinely REALLY boring to me [& others!] to have to explain my background when we're in a professional environment.

Saw that earlier, but couldn't reply. I think my accent throws them off a bit. White guy, RP accent flies under the radar mostly & they give this pretty condescending approval after I introduce myself and also have to go through a fucking 15 min preamble as to why the accent etc.

Getting a portable hookah and a fez, all with a twirly moustache and a quartet of wives to blow their goddamn minds with literally every single stereotype they've got from reading Ladybird Book of Orientalist Condescension.

A fez AND a turban AND Aladdin pants AND a scimitar AND those slippers with the pointy turned up toe.
