But at least the isinteger thing is internally consistent. It's not checking whether a number is an integer but whether the variable you input is... Of course there really should be a function to also do that with numbers (not sure, perhaps there is?)

That is what try-catch is. If you use it to catch all errors, that is REALLY bad practice.

Yes indeed. It's not the only bad practice. eval is another great evil... I was once in a place where they had written an entire script using eval commands... *shudder*

Surely you wouldn't want to do this for every line of code? Anyway, thanks for the discussion. I do with I could go back to when I still used C/C++ but that's not realistic...
