I know my surname is not "typically Cypriot" as you all like to remind me, but stop doing it as soon as we meet & you know my name [e.g., at conferences]. It's genuinely REALLY boring to me [& others!] to have to explain my background when we're in a professional environment.

Cypriots and Greeks do not do this to me BTW. It's almost always not people I'm currently speaking to in Greek (so like random Brits, etc.) who do it. I know you are curious, I get it, but... it's not the time!

The # of times I have to explain I'm not legally Cypriot (yet) & my dad has been in Cyprus for 30+ years & my mum is yes ethnically Cypriot & on & on & on... do I ask you so much about your family? I mean it's pretty much a waste of time — to me! I'm here to talk about work!

It's also kind of racist in its manifestation. I'm from the Middle East, we're different, sorry. Let me spend my time doing something else rather than "excusing" my existence to appeal to Western standards of surnames and ethnicity.

This gets to me only because it's so fucking irrelevant. I could make a website explaining all this, but I know the people who ask what ME in person to explain it because they aren't THAT interested they want it delivered on a plate.

Anyway if you are curious about my ethnic background whatever, ask me when I'm not working and then I can decide to talk or not. Often I like to chat about it, but at work? No.
