convo i had with a colleague over my preprint:
- so what is a preprint?
- *i explain*
- you can never do that in my field!
- why?
- because your ideas would be scooped
- but this also protects you against that. your ideas are publicly stamped with your name.
- *skeptical look*

Well, it’s not that uncommon & happens when applying for grants as well. At least by preprint, idea is dated w/ added bonus of feedback from ppl in the field

And also during peer review of publication submission

i bet it does happen but wouldn’t think it would be too prevalent to require strategic defense against it. though what would you do? not publish? lol.

happened to my advisor. i know ppl who review get ideas from grant apps & jour subm. Of course, we continue doing these practices; i was just responding to worries of the skeptical person. Only safe place 4 one’s ideas is one’s head. Goal is to push sci forward & help humanity

It's happened to a bunch of people I know... Really disappointing.

Preprints prevent it from happening, so that's something.
