I think of the reasons spreadsheet software is more approcahable than R/Python for a lot of folks is that you can directly see & manipulate the data structure. Learning how to conceptualize data structures is a specialized skill that takes time to learn.

I'm wondering do you regex-replace in a text editor as well? Quite often I find myself doing even pretty complicated regular expressions on hundreds of lines in Sublime/vim.

There is something about rich and interactive visual feedback that's much more compeling than typing clear commands and look at print. I imagine as we develop better human-computer interfaces actual coding will rapidly decline in favor of virtual interfaces and gesture inputs mby

How do you automate or replicate the complex stuff you do?

I run a bunch of `sed` commands until I get what I want, export the history into a shell script or markdown document and clean up the bits that didn’t work. It’s all there if I need a record of what I did or to run it on another batch of files. It gets the job done.
