I think of the reasons spreadsheet software is more approcahable than R/Python for a lot of folks is that you can directly see & manipulate the data structure. Learning how to conceptualize data structures is a specialized skill that takes time to learn.

You used a word I'm familiar with in a non-standard way. That's something I feel the need to point out — you related "hackathon" with not coding. That's fine but it's a strange new trend I want to comment on. I've been around a while and I know how we used to use "hackathon".

Hackathon is actually something that computer science students (ex student in my case of course) naturally tend to do every time we have an assignment due the next day. It's something in my blood that's a "bad habit" but also some of the coolest memories.
