Someth that some of my kindred spirits in science and I often discuss is how we're not that interested in being big names. We just wanna do some science. Nothing wrong with being ambitious, but it does seem very often the narratives presented cater to ppl who want to be "big".

Agree
and it bugs me that most advice I hear presupposes that everyone shares the same goals. -
The sad truth is that I think many do, or end up doing, it's a weird world how many are followers. Like I really feel even in science you get the group of non-conformist conformists BS going on.
-
Like they almost seem to define themselves as non-conformists and yet are essentially following a certain *ehem* let's say group of leaders...
-
It's a bit of a tangent, but it's of course the case that most people within a (sub)culture tend towards the norms of that culture. That's fine, but not ALL of us are like that!
-
Yup definitely not.

TBH, my great unattainable career ambition mostly involves having a permanent job and being able to afford normal human things like nice food and occasional journeys.

A permanent job would be so nice.

I often feel overlooked cos my work will never reach top IF journals. My heart screams I DON’T CARE but I’m programmed by the culture to feel like I should. Partially why I’m more involved with industry nowadays; gives some clarity away from ego-centric academia.

Makes so much sense.

I hope more funding councils realise there’s sometimes a “clique” where a handful get all the grants yet lots of great researchers struggle to get their wage stable for more than a year!

It's getting worse as an academic. Big means you are good at writing grants. That's a completely different skillset. You need to find out what the research council wants, need to package it as a PR piece where you sell yourself to them. So basically you need to be a sales person.
