I think of the reasons spreadsheet software is more approcahable than R/Python for a lot of folks is that you can directly see & manipulate the data structure. Learning how to conceptualize data structures is a specialized skill that takes time to learn.

I run a bunch of `sed` commands until I get what I want, export the history into a shell script or markdown document and clean up the bits that didn’t work. It’s all there if I need a record of what I did or to run it on another batch of files. It gets the job done.
