SEO doesn't exactly work like that, at lest not for everybody. Google my name, I bet you my website is before all the ones UCL created for me.

Sure enough. I was basing my comment on the experience a colleague had when he moved from university hosting to a custom domain. He said the page rank dropped significantly.

A problem for ECRs is that, tying to a Uni's search rankings isn't as reliably as shunting traffic and links towards your own website, since we change unis every 1-5 years.

SEO isn't that hard though. My page ranks highly because I linked it to my UCL pages and some of them link back to my domain. Copy pasting text (bios, blurbs) is a huge nono and will kill your ranking.

It's not that easy either of course, but given Google weights http://ac.uk edu and so on domains by association our sites can rank moderately highly if not awfully long freebie URLs and/or subdomains.

Also just to be clear I agree with both of your advice and experiences. They match how I understand SEO and I think it's easy to play the system given we have access to our names and URLs appearing on University websites.

I have the same thoughts as
@o_guest - actually my own website doesn't rank first now (but 5th behind uni and Twitter), but I've moved hosts in a hurry so my name is not actually properly featured in the name of the Wordpress website so that might be it1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

Also it's WordPress so that's probably a bit hit and miss.

I do rank first for some queries related to blog posts (I also have a plugin which helps with that) but I've never actually looked at my home page that way :D

If people can Google you and find you even if not on your domain, that's good enough.
