I wish people realised autopilot in aeroplanes, automatic fire curtains, convictions for planning a crime, for example, are all cases which highlight what actions and crimes society defines that actually are similar to what people think are uncharted waters for AI.

We already in many cases have examples of so-called new scenaria from free past. A lot of the issues they think AI raises are very important but they aren't 100% new

Also a lot of these things are for society to discuss, with ethics, philosophy, etc, not just engineering and science... And it'd for us all to decide what is and isn't ok and we should demand that.

I think a lot of folks got seduced by the Superintelligence thesis because it’s very sexy but unfortunately it’s so far from reality people think AI will only happen decades from now.

I feel that's actually highly related but a parallel issue. Even if super human intelligent system were theoretically possible, they'd need to be defined for me to say if they are anyway, it's still the same debate really as with less intelligent agents.

Unless we radically change our values and legal system (which might be useful in any case, but likely won't happen) it's not like it matters how intelligent the agent is but who controls it.

Notwithstanding, I totally agree, if any definition of super intelligent were compatible with the real world even in theory it's in the distant future.

But I think there's definitely something to be said about the rhetoric around AI systems. Autopilot is not seen as AI, for example. Basically anything that appears to do what humans do, even if just behaviourally is slowly classes as less intelligent and we move the goal posts.

This is a cool point @ProfData brought up by the way, not my idea, but it really resonates with me.
