I didn't even know what a hosta was a month ago... but then I fell in love with the leaves at the garden centre. The flowers are really pretty too — though I had no idea. I'm so lucky!

They do! I'm going to pot these so hopefully it's going to help! Otherwise I guess lead/bronze (?) tape? Does that work?
I think copper tape is the standard one. Gets expensive if you have more than a pot or two. I have good luck standing the pot in a saucer of water which provides a moat and also means they don't dry out (they are thirsty beasts).
Ahhh! That's a good idea I will be reactive though as it's in a lightwell so walls on all four sides might stop them?
Looks like they are sitting on gravel which is also a deterrent. I wouldn't be too worried but keep an eye out for tell-tale holes in leaves. If you see it then look around for the beasties, e.g. on bottom of outside of pot or inside between soil and wall.
My top tip is to not mind too much about a few holes! I'm only worried if a young plant is being decimated so puts it at risk.
They're on slate chippings, yes.
