Overwatered?

-
Yip sigh

It's possible, in certain cases, to save them. And you will learn something from trying at least even if they still die. The first step is to unpot them and cut off all the rotting parts.
-
Google your specific plant to find out what repotting soil it needs and what root rot looks like for them, cut off the rot as best you can, and repot them in new soil. Make sure your new soil is safe by buying new ingredients and mixing or pre-mixed obv.
-
Usually repotting means watering but obviously in this case do not water them for at least a few days. Check back on them often and see if they are recovering. Good luck!

What species are your plants?

My 40 year old one mostly died recently - main stem rotted. But I got a few cuttings to root. I figured out why. Too cold. We'd dropped our thermostat to save energy and plant was in a cooler part of our house.

Yeah, tropical baby. Hope it's clone is doing well!

They say "thanks" The biggest piece is already making new, split leaves, the smaller one also doing wellpic.twitter.com/BwAQtdEjqO

Nice work!!!

Beautiful! Have you put them in a warmer spot? -
For now, yes. It's called "summer"
. But as long as they're small enough, I have a tropical plant case with lights that make it a few degrees warmer. When they get big (original was 3 m), I will have to figure out a better answer.
