No, this has been a productive discussion! I also like this a lot better than being quote-tweeted

one last comment is yes some game system and it even seems absurd, but junior students in my lab often really encouraged and excited by cogsci. actual feedback on work with known turn around time. i think a feature of the community not bug.

That's nothing to do with proceedings imo :)

but the peer review of six page papers for proceedings is exactly what i’m saying is unique and positive for early career scientists in my experience. many societies have ~100% admit abstracts that don’t offer chance to engage in entire write/review/publish cycle in 3-4 month

another angle: for the last ~10 years i’ve devoted a week to read and comment on 6-10 6 page papers usually first authored by students i don’t know. as a member of program committee i’ve overseen countless more thoughtful reviews. what is the problem here?

I feel like you're attacking a position I don't hold. It's absurd to question the scientific value of communication and training so this stance is unrelated to my broader qualms

So I'm really glad to hear positive things, younglings being heartened by cogsci, etc. However it's not been my personal experience. If I was to say anything to improve cogsci itself, I'd love a clear code of conduct. I had some pretty mixed/unwelcoming interactions last year.

I not claiming a code of conduct will fix unwelcoming/elitist stuff in a direct way, but I'd like to hope it could create a generally better atmosphere.
