      Sanjay Srivastava Retweeted UO Matters

Gentle suggestion: Don't be that clueless dude who's like "call me Bob" and thinks he's being casual when there's zero risk your students will forget you're in charge. In settings where your women/minority/etc. colleagues ask to be called Professor, insist on it for yourself toohttps://twitter.com/uomatters/status/1004931957401063425 …

      Sanjay Srivastava added,

      UO Matters @uomatters
I'm no game theorist, but my brother Rick, aka Professor Richmond Harbaugh, has a paper showing that use of a title like Professor can be seen as a signal that the person has some reason to fear appearing unqualified. https://kelley.iu.edu/riharbau/RePEc/iuk/wpaper/bepp2005-05-harbaugh-to.pdf … https://twitter.com/etkeld/status/1004884487191359488 …

I agree that acting casual doesn't get rid of the power imbalance but to argue in favour of the insistence on privilege (calling yourself Prof) and hierarchy because people with traditionally less power do that seems far fetched and the wrong way.

I don't think anybody thinks that hierarchy of skill is bad though? Not all hierarchy is oppressive inherently.

Well, I don't think that hierarchy is inherently oppressive but I can totally imagine world in which the existence of differences in knowledge and skills are appreciated without a fixed hierarchy. Why do you need to hierarchy to teach adults, which needs to be fixed in titles?

I don't see the benefit of those titles at least.

For me personally, I prefer Dr when those forms ask for title.

          Replying to @o_guest @CharlesDriverAU and

Agreed. In the Netherlands there is a habit of writing “Mrs. Dr.” in formal letters, which I dislike personally. My gender is / should be irrelevant for my professional title.

I might have misinterpreted your Q, I meant I'd be pleased to get rid of any such titles altogether...
