As a many year user of Matlab - don't learn Matlab. Python will serve you much better (and if you learn it you can do Matlab too). I'm still trying to switch to Python but its like a drug you know you shouldn't use.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll also look into Python and figure out what's best for me. I appreciate all of this!!

I second the recommendation of
@o_guest 's opinion on this. I used matlab for 4 years, left academia and look back and wonder how much more productive (then and now) I would have been with Python instead...2 replies 1 retweet 7 likes -

Most things that are in the post, but my main annoyances are that I need to have an internet connection for my license to work, and that it's not transparent what imports there are (I guess you can specify this, but you don't have to)

I don't think notebooks are the easiest thing to get with Python. Start simpler if you can!

Agreed - I don't really understand notebooks because I need to have an overview of what variables I already have (like in Matlab). Spyder works for this

Oh, an IDE. I don't recommend that at all. But if you really need it, I understand and respect that.

I use Spyder when my focus is on algorithms, pycharm when focus is on writing good code. I have both programs open right now!
