I have never checked? It wasn't really a thing (as long as you have a number of chapters/papers)

I have a vague memory that in the UK they have guidelines for this, but I'm not sure?

In UK, PhD thesis length depends on Uni/Department-but often yes. Less than 100k for Imperial. Oxford has "normally" 100k for Anthropology/Classics/Education, 80k for Archeology/Continuing Education/English Language+Literature, 50k for Biochemistry/Biology/Medicine/Linguistics…

The shorter the better and around 50k is very sensible for 3-4 years of work IMHO.

We do the same at our research group - thesis to answer the research question, and separate research reports with all the details and logs of all experiments

I think I agree - I like a punchy and informative document, and the thesis is only part of the process of conducting PhD study - there are other places to learn to write 😁

I just picked my thesis off the shelf (at home 😎) and had a look to see if I had a word count... but I didn't declare it. I do remember that printing it double sided was considered "edgy'. Too many hard and formal formatting rules/culture are curious & limiting…pic.twitter.com/8wgXWfw8VS

I would have never thought double sided printing would be an issue for some people... interesting!

Most theses were not double sided. My thesis is "thin" on my supervisors shelf because of this. On formatting, this meant I had to follow a tiny rule, as the double sided document made me fix the size of the gutter (bound) margin. Felt strange (but reasonable).
