Let's make New Zealand the best place in the world to be a child! Earlier this year, we outlined our ambition to cut child poverty in half within 10 years. Yesterday the Prime Minister set out the first three-year targets towards this goal.http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12021299 …

Condemning them to a lifetime of welfare dependency and state oppression is never going to make NZ the best place to be a child. Teaching them to take responsibility for themselves and their families and to strive for achievement without state interference is much better.

Welfare dependency is definitely something that needs to be targeted, but should we stand by and see children suffer poverty and material hardship in the meantime? "Teaching them to take responsibility for themselves" and "strive for achievement" do you mean the children?

There is no reason for NZ children to suffer poverty in NZ right now and they don't by international standards. I mean to teach mainly Maori and Pacific parents how to reverse their collective approach to life and start taking personal responsibility for their own welfare.

"By International standards", I'm guessing you're including third-world countries- which we're not. How about OECD ratings, where does NZ rate? One issue is the way we even measure poverty, but there's more than enough evidence from those involved in social services to confirm

As far as the second part of your statement, you're basically saying that Maori and Pacific parents are at fault? Just...wow... Regardless, what can a child do about their situation?

It's plainly obvious from all the stats that are available explaining this situation that majority of those affected are Polynesian. Before you start the usual diatribe you should realise the truth can not be racist. Children can do nothing except learn welfare is a bad future.

But your "truth" is you think they are in that situation though their "collective approach to life" and personal responsibility? The only "truth" is there are NZ kids in need, and ignoring the issue so they "learn welfare is a bad future" is bloody heartless, IMHO

The issue is those families are already getting extremely generous welfare benefits and it's not working. Giving them more will not make it better. My heart is working to ensure my own family is properly looked after. I accept the responsibility. Their parents are feckless.

Did you not read "changes being made to the way child poverty is measured is likely to see numbers increase before they go down", or did you just not understand it?

And what about disabled children with additional needs living in poverty because the parents who care for them full time are caught up in welfare when they should be paid as working parents with access to Working for Families & additional supports where required? Hush hush?

This is a valid question, and I'm sure there are many NZ families in this difficult position that would appreciate an answer from the Govt, and deserve one...

Well done. Care starts at home. However you've got a huge hump on your backs with the child indecent assaults that have happened recently. I'd almost use the words a systemic problem!

The only way to chop child poverty in half is to accept that more than one kid to a bedroom or having to share access to the internet and maybe not getting an out of town holiday at least once a year IS NOT POVERTY IT'S LIFE!

Disabled, married with children. Still waiting for help and consideration. We would like to go on marches. The campaign must still be flowing among the Socialist elite. Maybe when it runs out they may be kind.
