It's not really free is it, someone has to pay and it's us the tax payer
-
It's called social investment has considerable payback to taxpayers in reducing unemployment & supporting the economy with the skills it needs, in particular it creates pathways for the poor to develop their skills especially those of Maori & ethnic backgrounds. Huge return to NZ
-
Oh, and do we really need more people with skills in puppetry, basket weaving, gender studies and 18th century poetry? How is that going to result in a considerable payback in reducing employment and supporting the economy?
-
I don't know all the fine details yet but gender studies or in case equality in management contributes to massive economic gain to New Zealand according to the very staid TV One news tonight

You've absolutely nailed it. The taxpayer totally does pay for most education. We also heavily subsidise the tertiary sector as well as pay for interest write-offs on student loans. That way we can have a well educated population. Some would argue that this is a good thing.

What if the final year of an undergraduate course or post school training qualification was free? Would that not improve motivation to knuckle down and complete what they've set out to do?

Silly wasteful policy. They should have made year 3 free, upon graduation. The drop out rate at year one will be something to behold (I.e eye watering with a mighty taxpayer bill!)

-
national showed it didn't care, thats not the case with the new govt and they cannot do everything all at once in 1 month.
-
dont you remember 1999 to 2008 under labour
-
have you forgotten 2008 - 2017 already? its not 1999 to 2008 and its not the same Labour led govt either.
