Can someone explain why this is national news? Not just this instance, but any canonization. Not just NYT but all media outlets.

Explain:El Salvador destroyed by terrible civil war-US gave over $300 million military aid every year to a country the size of Massachusetts. During that time 75,000 civilians were killed tortured from the military & Death squads This man gave his life in in attempt to stop it.

Thank you. I don't want to diminish the importance of this man or his sacrifice. I still don't understand why canonizations in general are newsworthy.

I understand, I do not have much use for church, The pope etc. but I am glad to see this man be celebrating, especially in the dark times we all face. Peace.

Lots of folks were canonized in 2 world wars. They're pushing up dasies today!
