In Opinion Op-Ed contributor David Adler writes, "As Western democracies descend into dysfunction, no group is immune to the allure of authoritarianism — least of all centrists"https://nyti.ms/2GNU6LR

Given that the literal definition of ‘centrism’ is ‘opposition to extremism’ and that most people’s beliefs fall closer to the ‘center’ by definition, this is a pretty fascinating exercise in victim-blaming

Authoritarianism isn't really an extremist position though. And it's easy to see how centrists would continue to get pulled right through shifts in the Overton window. If society shifts right and centrists don't adjust, they're not centrists anymore, and so they move right.

Good point. I will concede that. That said, the ideologies traditionally thought of as 'far-left/right' are inherently reliant upon 'us vs them' conspiracism, which makes them more logically (if not inevitably) suited for authoritarianism.

If your research is saying that centrists are more likely to be authoritarian than extremists, you need to go back and find out what you got wrong. https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/999953256188137472 …

Funny because last time I checked, those elements on the far-left and right were doing everything possible to "sabotage" democracy while centrists remained the "only" sane voice.

My kids teased me about this book. They said if I didn't already know how to read, there was no hope for me. When they were older, I bought each of them a copy. Every one of them read it and said it was a great book! ;-)

The radical center have always worked against either side. They really aren't center, but take the extreme from both sides. They take the economic extremism of the right, and they take the social extremism of the down.
