A college knew one of its students was in distress before he killed himself. Should officials have told his parents?https://nyti.ms/2GdaRjg

If the student was an adult, I don't think the college can.

Doctors and therapists not only can but are legally bound to, even if it's an adult. Maybe some new rules need to be put into place so that education facilities can seek help for their students.

My daughter's doctor couldn't discuss medical issues with me in the room until my daughter said that it was okay. Maybe the student said not to involve his parents. I am sure HIPAA is very subject to interpretation & you are probably right about some new rules.

Medical issues, and mental health issues that get into suicide or harming others are very different. Every dr and therapist, I have ever seen made it very clear that if they felt the need, they could contact others, family, police, DHS, etc. about my mental health state.

No, I didn't, and it's not a question. It's a statement. It's also been in every legal agreement I've read for medical providers since I was like a teen.

Doctors ABSOLUTELY can if a patient is suicidal or threatens to harm/kill another person. They also have to in cases of child abuse or child sexual assault. There are other exceptions as well. http://supp.apa.org/books/Essentia …

The world keeps telling kids they have to go to college. Then kids take out loans. Then kids die having paid tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours to be somewhere they didn't understand. We owe it to these people to help them.

That’s for sure. There’s a fed law that protects student privacy but there’s an emergency/health/safety exception that must be used. Tragic.

As someone who works in Higher Education, I can vouch that the school is legally bound to privacy laws that forbid them from contacting parents. Not everyone has a great parental situation. In some cases the parents are the stressors. So terribly tragic though. 😔
