A college knew one of its students was in distress before he killed himself. Should officials have told his parents?https://nyti.ms/2KVcMwB

How would you sue an institution from sharing medical information which it is illegal to do?

Exactly, once my kids turned 18 I couldn't even call to make dr appointments for them anymore. They are adults and like I told my kids, college is different from high school. In college, teachers dont care if you were there or not. It's all on you for success or failure.

No. Professor here. It is illegal! I can’t tell you how many angry parents I have to basically be rude to when they refuse to accept I will NOT discuss their child with them without that student’s specific written permission. “But I pay their tuition and have a right..” 🤮

When it’s a matter of suicide, you absolutely should tell a parent. How would you react if it were your child and you could possibly get him help?!?

Wrong. They are legal adults. They possess a right to privacy, including privacy from their parents. I’ve had to deal with this several times and I refer the student to the university counseling center (and notify them) but they will NOT call or talk to the students parents

Indeed. If the parents want access to such information in exchange for their money, they must sign a contract with their child... who will still be the only one responsible for having that information forwarded to them. That's what being an adult mean.

What kind of question is that? If they don’t tell his parents who do they wanna tell? Sometimes there are issues the school can never handle properly. Now he’s dead.

Was this an FDA approved suicide? Was the victim taking Rx pills, antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, SSRI's, Benzos? Any Rx drugs w/ side effects of depression, anxiety, psychosis & suicide? May just have been a mere Rx drug side effect... can happen to anyone taking such pills
