Every year, parents send their children to college, trusting that they will be well, or that word will come if they are not. Gina Burton had lived every parent’s nightmare: a child flunking out, sinking into despair, his parents the last to know.https://nyti.ms/2GaHAFH

(2). Colleges need to be less of a business and more of an education and experience for young adults. Return to the structure of 4 - 5classes per semester and don’t allow overloads. Limit extracurriculars and allow for health balance of school and life. 1 major/1 minor only.

I worked in a college dean’s office. One day a woman called mad as hell because she thought her daughter was going to graduate, but the truth was the daughter had dropped out two years earlier. Really.

        (1) So sad. College health and wellness systems are overwhelmed. The privacy rules limit communication with parents. So many systemic issues. Prevention could help reduce the stress on students. The pressure they feel to do multi majors/minors and accumulate credit by credit..

This young man sounds like he was going through a schitzophrenic episode and it is so sad that no one seemed to recognize this. The bursts of creativity and insomnia certainly point to it. My heart goes out to his parents.

1100 college kids commit suicide every year. More than the world total of mass school shootings since records have been kept. Except if you include dictator(mostly communist)purges of institutions.

Such a sad, sad story. I wish the privacy ‘walls’ between student privacy and parents right to intervene were more fibrous or permeable than the rigid steel they appear now to be. Glad some profs, at least, tried to reach out. We need more plain old Golden-Rule humanity here.

As a parent, one paying some or all the fees, I would never allow my child to opt me out of all privacy settings, and I haven’t. Parents who do are fools and I question their rationale.

It’s simple. The kid really didn’t want to go to college. It’s a big mistake to “make” your grown up kid go to college. Those are YOUR expectations not the kid.
