One woman had an ancestor who was lynched in Georgia in 1912; the other had relatives who helped in the killing. Now they’ve become friends.https://nyti.ms/2KCUtMz

My family would never ever be friends with the Voultine’s of Claiborne Parish, Louisiana whose family members lynched and burned my great uncle William “Bill” Bailey in July 1910.

What point is this article trying to make? Nobody is guilty for the sins of their ancestors and the idea that a white and black person living in the same area should happen to become friends in the modern era really should be so banal that it doesn't need highlighting.

The point is - if their ancestors could see them now they'd be rolling in their graves. Hate always loses in the end.

It is an absurd relationship. Those who forget or forgive the past are condemned to relive it. A leopard never changes it spots.

When are we going to move on with this? 100 years ago and still carrying the hate? None of these woman has anything to do with what happened.

When institutionalized racism is eliminated. When police brutality is eliminated. When we realize 100 years is not long ago. When we realize people who were present during the Civil Rights Era are still alive and their beliefs have been passed down. When we move past apathy.

They are organizing and fighting against the unfair circumstances they are in. That is taking your destiny in your on hands to whatever extent you can. Much more than "don't talk abou stuff that makes me uncomfortable with and it will totally go away on its own, by magic."

I agree with that. I also believe that organized communities should fight to reduce crime, gang violence and drug dealing. Also fight for better schools and education. Work together with authorities
