It'd be great if we had as much compassion for old people as we do for old pets.

This is almost exactly what my mother used to say. Her version was “we treat our pets better than we treat our very ill humans.”

It’s seems difficult to understand other people’s choices about quality of life except when it’s your own. I understand and respect his decision.

It’s a life with few regrets that enabled him to choose such a neat exit. For the most part I envy him. Certainly respect his decision.

He feels it is time and his wishes need to be respected. So sad he has to fly from home to achieve his wish- that is the cruelty

Fascinating story. I hope he finds the dignified and peaceful ending he wishes for.

He will. And I’m so glad for him. Just sad he has to travel so far to die in a country that’s not his own and that the family that go with him, will have to journey home while so freshly grieving.

The key is "thy will" and not our "own will" as to the time of death. There is a reason for life on earth(though life is eternal as we shed these bodies and go on living in spirit).

Not everyone is a Christian. And not all Christians feel that someone should suffer needlessly.

So sad. Lost his ability to work, so he feels worthless. Beautiful grandson, but he needs to feel useful. My book, "100 & Healthy," calls for us to find meaning in all of our life.

He wasn't healthy.

There’s nothing to debate, as far as I’m concerned. The man is miserable, he doesn’t enjoy life anymore, and he just wants it to end. Nobody should have the right to force him to stay alive if he cleary doesn’t want to.

So sad... Hope he sees a different way of life and doesn't choose to kill himself.

The man has forgotten more than you will ever know. He has made a reasoned and reasonable decision concerning his quality of life. He is 104 and no longer wants to put up with the deterioration of his life. There is no reason to change his mind, he deserves his dignity.
-
All this shows is that people care so little of the eldery. If he was treated better. Loved more. He wouldn't feel like the way he does now. Maybe thats all he needs. Just some genuine love.
