I was of the opinion that whole premise of The Simpsons was predicated on cultural and racial stereotypes; that's the whole point. If you want to strip the stereotypes away from The Simpsons, then you have no show at all.

We need to stop pretending like we have all never seen an Apu like character in the world. The Simpsons is made of caricatures. The 'solution' is not to remove Apu from the show. Its to introduce a second Indian character that follows a different stereotype ie a young tech mogel.

Apu has a masters in Computer Science. It’s established early on in the show.

I make no claim to be a Simpsons expert and haven't watched for years. But in my viewing experience Apu is a minority, family man, business owner who's one the hardest workers in Springfield and is a way the show displays how diversity can work in America.

Apu, is of course a stereotype, but a fondly depicted one, and a pattern that every presently successful immigrant community has gone through.

First generation arrives and takes a job ranging from menial to mediocre. Next generation gets educated and succeeds wildly beyond expectations. (Not their parents expectations, because they can never live up to those) 3rd generation becomes a film maker or a stand up comic.

APU was the lone voice of wisdom & calm on the Simpsons. He represented Indian cartoon characters with respect & a sense of aplomb

The beauty of the Simpsons was (and is) how it ridiculed stereotypes by embracing and owning them. Period. Yes, I DO want some vodka with my beef jerky, Apu. Thank you.
