"The 'Mona Lisa' has, to all meaningful intents and purposes, ceased to exist as an original work of art. It has become an idea — and a photo opportunity."https://nyti.ms/2r6wbkP

I drove past a tourist bus in Paris and saw a guy in the bus taking a picture of a postcard of the Basilica du Sacre-Coeur instead of taking a picture of the actual building. It was astonishing to see he wasn't even looking at what was right in front of him, just taking a pic.

The size of the painting is not impressive but I actually ‘got it’ when we stayed in the countryside where Lisa supposedly lived. Then I understood. On the other hand, viewing Michelangelo’s David in person totally blew me away. It was stunning without any context needed.

On this 95 degree day in Paris last summer, nothing prepared me for the amount of armpits I had to endure and smell to get to see the Mona Lisa up close. #Louvrepic.twitter.com/k60X3ad5B7

The Louvre should control flow of visitors viewing the Mona Lisa at any one point. It will bring about an insane queue and long waiting times but I think most will appreciate the art better in a more tranquil setting.

For some, perhaps. However art does not insist upon the beholders' means of appreciation.

It's really tourists who are doing it. A lot of people understand what the painting is and the story behind it. And what's the big deal with taking a picture of it? It's probably the most famous and iconic work of art in history
