“The idea that anyone, young or old, past or present, was bullied or teased based on the character of Apu, it just really makes me sad," said Hank Azaria, who offered to "step aside" from the rolehttps://nyti.ms/2HpTPUu

That wasn’t a problem in the 90’s was it! This world is so fucking soft anymore. Can’t sneeze without someone’s feelings getting hurt

I was picked on for being a shy, pudgy kid in school. But thankfully I was taught early on that 1) life is not, nor ever will be, fair, and 2) there are assholes in the world. Two truths of life that helped me to suck it up and get some thicker skin.

I had a friend growing up Who was Indian. And at no time did we make fun of him cuz of Apu. He didnt have an accent seeing as he was born her but he would always say thank you come again the way Apu does and it was hilarious.

That's actually an interesting point...one of the other things we can't seem to do anymore is find humor in our differences. People today seem offended simply because we ARE different from each other.

I'm 100% Polish so like at work if I do something dumb my coworkers call me a polak. I don't think their being racist I know its a joke.

The irony with Polish humor (half my family is Polish) is that Poles are the exact opposite of the stereotype. Some of the most brilliant, family-oriented, hard working folks on earth.

And thats what most of These types of shows do is accentuate stereotypes. Common sense should be had to not take it as a serious view on any race, creed or color. But as a way to bring people together through laughter

Being mocked at school is of course bad but I would argue it has more to do with lack of empathy then a cartoon.

The show taught bullies how to tease Indian American kids

IMO you're wrong. Kids are mean because they get carried away in anger, because they want to impress sbd, because they're going through some rough stuff but not because of Simpsons.

bullying is a skill that bullies need to learn (usually through peers or by trial and error). In this case, however, they learned how to bully Indian American kids by watching the Simpsons.

Indian american kids growing up in the nineties heyday of the show were often mocked by bullies using Apu's catchphrases
