It is apparent that Canadian police are actually trained to de-escalate rather than immediately open fire.

Really all police in US should study this clip to see how to capture rather than shoot a suspect.

De-escalation training, de-escalation training, de-escalation training. Demanding proper training of our police agencies & personnel may be more effective than just calling them out as racists on twitter....thank you, Toronto PD, for showing us how #useofforce is done properly.

What a great officer! If only all our cops had that kind of confidence. I hope examples like that will make it into training in US. I know cops have a right to protect themselves, and the # of guns makes that tricky, but we have to change the culture here. #GunReformNow #NoRA

American law-enforcement should take training from Toronto law enforcement, and maybe so many innocent people wouldn’t be killed in America.

I hope it is used as a training video. This man needs a commendation. That beast killed 10 ppl and police officer calmly arrested him & diffused the situation. Some officers see a suspect & just shoot, multiple times, without obvious provocation. Training like this is v important

This officer’s training and good instincts came together at an extremely intense moment. He took control of the situation with no backup readily available and with innocent bystanders walking all around the scene. His composure is truly commendable.

America: Guy in his own backyard on a cellphone. Police: Shoot him 30 times in the back. Canada: Guy who has just killed a dozen people points something menacing at you. Police: Safely control the situation to make the man disarm and surrender.

For anyone who disagrees with the second portion now knowing that the driver in Toronto did the killings intentionally thereby thinking the cop should shoot him. What if the cop does, it’s not fatal, suspect returns fire, kills cop and escapes to do more harm to citizens.

Bright sunny day, cop could easily see the guy didn't have a gun. If he had any doubt about that, with bystanders nearby, not shooting the guy would have been a huge mistake.

No, not his job. Job is to protect people & enforce law. Sometimes that means putting himself in harms way. Point is, he didn't do anything extraordinary, he could see guy didn't have gun & concluded not a threat to anyone else. He followed same principles as US LEO training.

If guy actually had a gun and cop didn't shoot, that would have been inconsistent with training.

It is his job. You can’t protect someone if there is no threat of harm. You can’t enforce law if you believe you can “be the law”. Enforcing law doesn’t always mean shoot...

I get your point, just disagree with your interpretation of "job". Job is to protect serve enforce. Sometimes doing that puts LEO at risk of harm, sometimes it doesn't. At end of a shift, a LEO doesn't think he didn't do his job if he didn't put himself in harm's way that day.
