Many video games let players pay to open digital “loot boxes” that offer new features. Is that gambling?https://nyti.ms/2HXDDGW

We should go back to when achievements gave you cosmetic in-game items. I’m over loot boxes.

If what's in the box has no value in the physical world, then it's not gambling, just a game.

Lot of those games also have you lock-pic-ing to get what is in side. Is that theft/steeling/robbery. What are these video game people teaching our children is s valid question(s)pic.twitter.com/ibsJ3BDLdU

I'd like to see the 80 year old blue hairs in Congress try to write legislation for this. "What's a loot box? Who's looting what now? What are you over watching? Kids these days with their Nintendo games. Back in my day we had a stick and a old tire and that was enough for me!"

I’ve stopped playing many games due to this tactic. If I pay for a game I expect to enjoy it, not hit a pay wall to try to get more in game content where they deliberately make it more difficult to get what you want then offer a payment plan to make it easier to get it.

I think the problem with this definition is that it then opens the door for all trading card games (real or virtual) to be considered gambling, a label that Hasbro and Konami want to avoid being put on their bestselling TCG brands at all costs.

Short answer: no. Gambling assumes you’ll gain something of monetary value if you win. Loot boxes like you get in #Overwatch and #BF2 give you nothing of monetary value.

It is 100% gambling. Loot boxes ruined gaming last year, and will continue to do so unless you can actually get the things you want without resorting to a slot machine

Yes it is. You're putting money in for a perceived reward (usually the best items in the loot crate). When it turns out that you didn't get the desired reward, you are compelled to try again. The same can be said for any casino slot machine. Foolish apes get tricked easily.
