Citing religion, a woman refused to shake hands with male officials at a naturalization ceremony in 2016. Now, a top court in France has ruled the government could legally deny her citizenship.https://nyti.ms/2HSXveg

Who is being intolerant here...the French government or the woman who wants French nationality?

it’s assimilation if she doesn’t want to adapt to a french way of life then don’t go there

So people should be forced to shake hands in a democracy?

it’s just the way france creates an identity, through assimilation. if she can’t adapt to the way of life in france then she shouldn’t be a citizen

it’s not just about that it’s that if she can’t shake hands due to her beliefs what makes you think she would accept the way of life of the french (which constitutes of actions more intimate than just shaking hands with the opposite sex)

It’s a religious practice that causes no one any harm and is clearly a firmly and genuinely held belief. This is fucking with a persons life on the basis that they should violate their customs and beliefs to satisfy an incredibly arbitrary and unimportant practice.

Does France also deny citizenship to applicants who don’t enjoy French cuisine or fashion? To what extent must you “assimilate”? Who decides where the bar is set, and what does or doesn’t qualify, and on what basis? This is absolutely appalling behavior.

I would agree but the handshake is part of the culture. It's used in social and business situations and it shows that she's asking to be a Franch citizen but who'll never work on a french institution or socialize with french men. Idk man... Seems legit to tell her no!

Should they also deny a person who has no hands, as this practice is of such cultural importance that participating in it holds far more weight than any reason not to? This is choosing a minor social interaction’s importance over an individual’s right to be an individual.

France is a secular country. They are trying hard to make everyone abide by the same rules and have equality. Sadly there are certain religions which don’t play well in a secular society.

Quite dicy... but while in Rome you behave like a Roman. Their are countries you visit where you must adopt their way of dressing, not sharing cabs with men etc. She's aware of the country's way of life yet she applied for citizenship there so she has to live like them.

I like different cultures, but I think that if you go to another country and you want that citizenship, YOU should adapt, to a certain extent, to its customs. Not vice versa.
