When did it get to the point that people would rather spend money on the way a church looks, than spending money on the sick, poor, homeless and the people of the community? Apparently looking like you practice that religion instead of following its doctrine, is more important.

Please if you want to use commonsense to interpret this issue, you will surely miss the point. Maybe some other day.

So this cathedral, an ode to the religion that it houses... what exactly are the doctrines of said religion? Won’t the money be better used to alleviate the circumstances that many of the less fortunate and disenfranchised of our society find themselves? WE DONT NEED IT.

The problems of the masses are infinite. It should not stop us from getting a cathedral. Side by side we will get there.

The problem of the masses are infinite and a new cathedral is what is pressing? Side by side, true. But surely there’s a more pressing matter than a new cathedral.

This is the most perplexing opinion article I've ever read. "Others say the money for the project should have instead been invested in schools, hospitals and infrastructure — stuff that, according to them, Africa really needs."

I believe its a matter of national pride, like there really isn't much world renowned architecture in Sub Saharan Africa. Sure the money would be better spent on education (which long term would be more beneficial) however something to be proud of is important to many.

Thank you for chiming in. Better to hear it from someone there who actually deals with day to day life. Nothing about this plan seems helpful for anyone except those in power.

I don’t think it’s better to be honest. So that we, Ghanaians have something to brag about? I’d rather want to brag about being the cleanest country in the world than this.
