I was on Paxil when I was a teen. There was a mistake at my Dr’s office and I had to quit suddenly. I couldn’t sleep for days and suffered from what I called “brain zaps”. Turns out they were basically small seizures and I was lucky they weren’t worse.

Yeah, people tend to laugh when I tell them about how bad it was. I’m sorry you had to deal with it, but it’s reassuring to know that others had a similar experience as me. At the time I thought I was going crazy

Same here. I've tried many times. Withdrawal is scary.
-
Gosh I hope you haven't tried "cold turkey". It's important to reduce the dosage slowly or it can actually throw you into a depression.
-
Well i did try cold turkey like a dummy and it was terrible. I am on them for life. I feel a little better when taking them.
-
My hubs decides to go cold turkey every once in awhile and it is never a pretty picture. He has deep depression without maintaining a steady level and stopping suddenly throws him into some serious problems. You are smart to understand that it can be a lifetime thing.
-
Yeah i know how he feels.
-
We are all in such an incredibly difficult time right now. I feel for you!!!
-
Thanks. This Trump thing has made it much worse!
-
Yes, much worse! A WaPo opinion piece I read today said that we have been held hostage for 444 days with the Orange Blob in office and honestly being a hostage is exactly how it feels to me! Take time to do things that relax you. That is so important now

Ugh MISLEADING. The box says to NOT just stop taking them; you have to taper off. This is basic knowledge to anyone who does some basic reading about SSRIs etc., which you SHOULD BE DOING if you take them. It's NBD, you just can't pop them like aspirin.
-
My first thought was everyone involved in this article has VERY LITTLE experience with depression, anxiety, or the drugs that regulate them. Terrible article.
-
"Cannot quit" is phrased like addiction. Conflating narcotic withdrawls with the "zaps" etc. you get from quitting cold-turkey with no warning to your body that your balanced serotonin is about to plummet is ridiculous.
-
Those "zaps" are really uncomfortable. I got off of lexapro and had to deal with those. Different drugs cause different withdrawals symptoms, and just because it's not as bad as a heroin or xanax withdrawal, it is still a withdrawal. It's not a pissing contest.
-
It is certainly withdrawl, you are correct - but not addiction. That's the key here is that there is still huge misinformation and stigma around antideps etc. because the conflation with other drugs such as opiates makes them "scary".
-
I get that. I've dealt with depression most of my life, and most of my family views it as a moral failing rather than a disease - or a wussy. I think this article is more about the fact that we're in new territory with all the long term antidepressant users.
-
People failing to understand depression beyond an inability to "just be happy", which of course misidentifies depression as "sadness" in the first place, is really frustrating. Thought: It's odd to keep someone on the same antidepressant for years - burnout is almost expected...
-
well, i don't think they work that way (i mean, you don't build up a tolerance). For me, it's more about what SSRI is cheapest with my insurance.
