People are disgusting. Women who have children aren’t a liability. Choices? Society needs people to sustain itself. The way mothers are treated in this country is horrific and shameful.

This. The point is that women and mothers are not supported and are in fact punished while we continue to (no big deal) *ensure the survival of the human race*

all these people saying it's a choice... of course it is a choice to have children but why does that mean society shouldn't still value women after they become moms?

And two people decided to have a child but some how it is the "woman's choice" if it affects her earnings. In countries with "parent leave" more men take time off with kids. Somoene I know did b/c his wife is a Dr. He took the bulk of parenting leave when she went back to work.

Yes, and I'm sure his income suffered too. Most peoples understanding of pay gap is that it is due to discrimination. But it's not. It's a reflection of the differences in men and womens lives. Let's talk about childcare etc but let's stop pretending employers are being sexist.

Here's an idea, any father that doesn't take as least as much time off as the father should have it held against him. Children are as much their fathers' responsibility as their mothers'. Time to start acting like it.

I can't speak on behalf of all women in this situtation but my female co-workers in my working years were equal to my pay level both with and without children. Sometimes the story (media) do not have all of the facts.

They should have said "generally" never recovers. And no shit, they're investing more time raising children than furthering their careers.

Exactly. Like someone wins the lottery. Also, it matters if you stay home with your kids more than if you give birth and return to work. I regret staying home and don't recommend it.

Read a bit more than just the headlines... "The study found that over all, women earn $12,600 less than men before children are born." Their pay was down to start with, and the gap gets worse after they have kids.

This is about why the choice is not the same for women and men. And don't start with biology - there are countries where it's different. There are strong, cool confident men with prams all over Sweden...

Because men can't have babies. Women don't have to have babies, it's a choice. Men don't have to either, by the way. Same choice.

Have a child IS A CHOICE. If a couple does not want the financial effects of having a child, DON'T HAVE ONE.

Actually, every society needs children and it is in everybody's interest to see to it that this choice doesn't carry a needless amount of disadvantages. And then there are timeless qualities like solidarity.
