I’m disappointed in @nytimes for letting the quote dissing the primary care doctors stand unchallenged. Family Medicine physicians have extensive training on dx and tx of mood dx. And yes, we educate our pts. Discontinuation syndrome is real but this is a biased article.

I recently had to start taking Prozac. I've fought depression my whole life and gotten through it, but no more. Months of crying, mood swings and hiding were too much. Being 57 it's unlikely I'll ever get off them. They are a tool to be used when needed. Not all can quit.

I used to take it years ago and took it for years. Zero withdrawl symtoms. BTW something they don't tell you about prozac you should know... it causes bone thining. It is however one of the safest ones on the market.

I prefer depression than the side effects to the drugs. Working on changing your mindset, exercise etc. can help.

I have tried CBT and it worked before. Not now tho. And I have too many work-related injuries to exercise much. Fractured feet, broken ankle, 2 ACL repairs, etc etc. As for the meds I've only been on them 6 wks so still trying to find dosage levels. Am better than before so ...

yeah I have had many major surgeries myself, and back issues. You can do yoga or other stretching. I just think it's not worth the side effects. I started having osteoporosis in my early 40s from that sh*t. I get it. I've had depression my whole life.

my dr. recently wanted to put me back on them for anxiety that just started bad in the last year or so. I said NO.

Oh also... after a while Prozac will stop working. Don't up the dosage. Just quit taking it for a month and restart. That does the trick.

Cannabis is a depressant and acts on similar receptors as alcohol. Cannabis is NOT the answer. A long term effect of using cannabis is depression.

The withdrawal symptoms I got from sertraline were rough -- shakes, severe nausea, entire body aching, head in particular. But the pills were causing me to feel even worse mentally so I sorta had to tough it out until the withdrawal effects subsided

As a prescriber, let me say that it is possible to get off these antidepressants. A shame people weren't aware of discontinuation symptoms. Antidepressants are no more addictive than some blood pressure meds. See a professional for help if you want to stop or change.

I had zero side effects after years of taking one. Wonder why some people have them and some don't

Some antidepressants are more likely to cause discontinuation symptoms than others. Paroxetine and venlafaxine are a couple of the worst.

“... I suddenly realized I could feel the full range of emotions again. The birds were louder, the colors more vivid — I was happy.” NOT to take away from his happiness, but I felt the same for the first time in 29 years, and after being on meds for 3 yrs. Posit better, NYT.

I stopped taking Effexor & Prozac abruptly without telling my doc & felt AWFUL for several weeks. After about a year without any meds my depression returned, so I'm back on Effexor w/good results. If I chose to quit again I'll just taper the dosage down to avoid withdrawals.
