Just eat a sensible, varied diet rich in fresh veg (and preferably local and in season)... ahh that seems to cut out any junk food.

Did you read my comment on this at the NYT, Nix?

I have now .. I broadly agree with the thrust of the article... if they have a reasonably good diet, most people don't need most of what they take or that there's no evidence of benefit. There will probably be exceptions and your case sounds like one :)
-
The problem is that we cannot assume that people eat a resonably good diet anymore, especially not in America. Have you heard of the term SAD diet? It is used for the American diet: SAD = Standard American Diet. With people there working all the hours god has given them, ...
-
Yeah . Sad for a whole of reasons ... but working long hours never stopped me eating fresh carrot sticks prepared in advance at home instead of a chocolate bar from a vending machine (even though me and that machine renewed our acquaintance occasionally)

Americans are addicted to fast food. They love their burgers and donuts and soft drink. What you do, can be done; but how many people take the trouble to so it?

Not really. Being deficient in some nutrients can really have detrimental effects: B12, iron, etc. It can affect people differently. Unless one's diet is well-balances, supplements can be helpful.

The key that makes supplements valuable is when there’s deficiency based on annual blood work then take them to restore levels back to normal. Ex. a 6 years ago my D levels dropped below normal so D3 is part of my daily regiment. For past 5 years my levels are now perfect.
