Long-term use of the medications is surging in the U.S., according to an analysis by The New York Times. One reason: withdrawal symptoms that make it difficult to stop.https://nyti.ms/2GFoWLo

Excellent article, thank you for highlighting the immense problems experienced by so many patients. Ongoing campaign in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Many harrowing patient submissions here. http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01651 …

Thank you for reporting this. I thought I was nuts when I was trying to stop taking antidepressants and kept experiencing unpleasant feelings. I won’t go back on them again if I can help it!

Recently we have found that Clinical Depression is more like a chronic recurrent illness; perhaps that's the reason for its long term use, not the withdrawal (discontinuation syndrome). Please do responsible and informed jurnalism!

Is it possible that some of the symptoms people identify as due to withdrawal can be explained as a return of what caused them to originally seek antidepressants?

No, the intensity & depth of symptoms of withdrawal are very different to the original 'anxiety' or the 'depression'.

But if they've been on these medications for some time they may have forgotten exactly how they felt before. And there's the denial factor at play, where one tries, perhaps subconsciously, to forget painful thoughts and memories.

Unfortunately its deeper than that. A peek into the online forums & groups would help you understand this a bit better. Some get prescribed these for back pain & when they try & stop they start to experience the anxiety etc that they never had.

It's a complex issue. Any psychotropic drug therapy would be, by its nature. I for one tried antidepressants and had an uncommon side effect, way down on that list. I stopped, wasn't worth it, and vowed to never try again. Besides, they didn't seem to be working. I could go on.

It's definitely not depression that you feel getting off them. I was prescribed Effexor for cancer treatment side effects and had bizarre, horrible effects getting off it.

Guess I'm lucky - never could tolerate them long enough to see. Instead I use a low dose of Xanax as needed because a lot of my problem is anxiety anyway. Don't know what would eventually happen if I gave them up entirely, but they do have a short half-life, as that class goes.

If getting off depression drugs brings on symptoms of depression, maybe it’s not withdrawal, but relapse. Therefore, not addiction, but need. Concerned that people won’t seek needed help. Diabetics don’t experience “withdrawal” w/o insulin.

Please compare like with like. Diabetes is a scientifically verified chemical imbalance. No chemical imbalance has been verified in any psychiatric diagnosis, despite 50 yrs of false claims of their existence.
